Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
The Kingdom of Tonga offers visa-free entry to citizens of most countries, with a visitor's permit granted upon arrival at the airport. The length of stay permitted varies by nationality, and all visitors must meet standard entry requirements.
Citizens of these countries can enter Tonga without a pre-arranged visa and receive a visitor's permit on arrival
Visitor's permit is granted on arrival for tourism purposes. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay. Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds required. Extensions can be requested from the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa.
Some nationalities may be granted longer initial stays on arrival
Cost: No fee for initial visitor's permit
The length of stay granted is at the discretion of immigration officers and depends on travel plans and documentation provided
Citizens of countries not eligible for visa-free entry must obtain a visa before traveling
This applies to nationals of countries not listed in the visa-free category. Contact the Tongan Immigration Division or nearest embassy for specific requirements. Business visas and work permits require separate applications with additional documentation.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration and customs. The process is generally straightforward, though wait times can vary depending on flight arrivals. Having all required documentation readily accessible will help expedite the process.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Tonga's customs regulations are designed to protect the kingdom's agriculture, environment, and public health. All travelers must complete a customs declaration form and may be subject to baggage inspection. Biosecurity is taken very seriously due to Tonga's island ecosystem, and penalties for bringing in prohibited items can be severe.
Prohibited Items
- Fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant materials - strict biosecurity measures protect Tonga's agriculture
- Meat and dairy products - including processed meats, unless commercially packaged and declared
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - severe penalties including imprisonment
- Firearms and weapons - unless special permits obtained in advance
- Pornographic materials - Tonga has strict decency laws
- Counterfeit goods - including fake designer items and pirated media
- Certain medications - particularly those containing pseudoephedrine or other controlled substances without proper documentation
- Live animals and birds - without prior import permits from quarantine authorities
- Soil and sand - due to biosecurity concerns
- Endangered species products - protected under CITES regulations
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - bring only what you need with original packaging and doctor's prescription; declare at customs
- Seeds and plant materials - require phytosanitary certificates and import permits from the Ministry of Agriculture
- Honey and bee products - require inspection and certification
- Wooden items and handicrafts - may require fumigation certificates to prevent pest introduction
- Fishing equipment - must be clean and declared; may be inspected for biosecurity
- Drones and radio equipment - may require permits from relevant authorities
- Commercial goods and samples - require proper documentation and may incur duties
Health Requirements
Tonga's health entry requirements are designed to protect public health in the islands. While routine vaccinations are generally not required for entry, travelers should ensure they are up to date on standard immunizations and take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate - required only if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival)
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations - ensure you're current on measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and influenza
- Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers due to potential food and water contamination
- Hepatitis B - recommended for those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
- Typhoid - recommended for travelers visiting smaller islands or eating outside major restaurants
- COVID-19 - stay current with recommended vaccines and boosters
Health Insurance
Travel health insurance is strongly recommended but not currently required for entry. Medical facilities in Tonga are limited, and serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to New Zealand or Australia, which can be extremely expensive without insurance. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation and repatriation.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport (included on parent's passport is generally not accepted). If traveling with only one parent or with someone other than parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the child's travel. Birth certificates may be requested. Children are subject to the same entry requirements as adults, including proof of onward travel. Minors receive the same visitor's permit duration as accompanying adults.
Importing pets into Tonga requires advance planning and permits. Contact the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries well before travel (at least 60 days). Requirements typically include: valid rabies vaccination certificate, health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel, import permit from Tongan authorities, microchip identification, and possible quarantine period upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Pets must arrive as manifested cargo, not as accompanied baggage. Costs can be substantial, and requirements are strict.
Visitor's permits can be extended beyond the initial 31 days by applying at the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa before your current permit expires. Bring your passport, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, and onward ticket. Extensions are typically granted for up to 6 months total stay. Fees apply for extensions. For stays longer than 6 months or for purposes other than tourism (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit before entering Tonga or from within Tonga if circumstances change. Overstaying your permit can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.
Business visitors may enter on a standard visitor's permit for short business activities like meetings, conferences, or negotiations. For actual employment or extended business activities, a work permit is required and must be arranged by the sponsoring Tongan employer before arrival. Business visitors should carry invitation letters from Tongan business contacts and documentation of their business purpose. Working on a tourist visitor's permit is illegal and can result in deportation.
Private vessels must clear customs and immigration at designated ports of entry (Nuku'alofa, Neiafu, or Pangai). Contact Tongan authorities on VHF Channel 16 before arrival. All crew and passengers must have valid passports and meet standard entry requirements. The vessel captain must complete customs and immigration formalities for all aboard. Cruising permits are required and fees apply. Yachts must check in and out when moving between island groups.
Visitors seeking medical or dental treatment should enter on a standard visitor's permit but inform immigration of the purpose. Carry documentation from medical providers in Tonga confirming appointments or treatment plans. For extended medical stays, visa extensions can be requested with supporting medical documentation. Medical facilities are limited in Tonga, and most complex procedures require travel to New Zealand, Australia, or Fiji.
