Nukualofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, welcomes international visitors through Fua'amotu International Airport, located approximately 35 kilometers from the city center. Tonga maintains a relatively straightforward entry process for most visitors, with many nationalities eligible for visa-free entry upon arrival. The immigration system is designed to facilitate tourism while maintaining border security, and travelers will find the process at Fua'amotu International Airport to be efficient and welcoming. Most visitors to Nukualofa can obtain a visitor's permit on arrival, provided they meet basic entry requirements including holding a valid passport, possessing proof of onward travel, and demonstrating sufficient funds for their stay. The Kingdom of Tonga's immigration policies are generally favorable to tourists, with visa-free entry granted to citizens of most Western countries and many Pacific nations. However, all travelers must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date from Tonga. Before traveling to Nukualofa, visitors should verify current entry requirements with official Tongan government sources or their nearest Tongan diplomatic mission, as immigration policies, health requirements, and customs regulations can change. It's particularly important to check for any temporary health-related entry requirements and to ensure all necessary documentation is prepared in advance to ensure a smooth arrival experience.

Failure to declare large amounts may result in confiscation and penalties. Declaration forms are provided on arrival.

Tonga's health entry requirements are designed to protect public health in the islands. While routine vaccinations are generally not required for entry, travelers should ensure they are up to date on standard immunizations and take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate - required only if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival)

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers due to potential food and water contamination
  • Hepatitis B - recommended for those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Typhoid - recommended for travelers visiting smaller islands or eating outside major restaurants
  • COVID-19 - stay current with recommended vaccines and boosters

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is strongly recommended but not currently required for entry. Medical facilities in Tonga are limited, and serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to New Zealand or Australia, which can be extremely expensive without insurance. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation and repatriation.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly, particularly regarding COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Check current requirements with the Tongan Ministry of Health or your nearest Tongan diplomatic mission within 2 weeks of travel. Requirements may include pre-departure testing, vaccination certificates, health declarations, or quarantine periods. Visit official government websites for the most current information before your trip.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (included on parent's passport is generally not accepted). If traveling with only one parent or with someone other than parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the child's travel. Birth certificates may be requested. Children are subject to the same entry requirements as adults, including proof of onward travel. Minors receive the same visitor's permit duration as accompanying adults.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets into Tonga requires advance planning and permits. Contact the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries well before travel (at least 60 days). Requirements typically include: valid rabies vaccination certificate, health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel, import permit from Tongan authorities, microchip identification, and possible quarantine period upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Pets must arrive as manifested cargo, not as accompanied baggage. Costs can be substantial, and requirements are strict.

Extended Stays

Visitor's permits can be extended beyond the initial 31 days by applying at the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa before your current permit expires. Bring your passport, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, and onward ticket. Extensions are typically granted for up to 6 months total stay. Fees apply for extensions. For stays longer than 6 months or for purposes other than tourism (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit before entering Tonga or from within Tonga if circumstances change. Overstaying your permit can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travel

Business visitors may enter on a standard visitor's permit for short business activities like meetings, conferences, or negotiations. For actual employment or extended business activities, a work permit is required and must be arranged by the sponsoring Tongan employer before arrival. Business visitors should carry invitation letters from Tongan business contacts and documentation of their business purpose. Working on a tourist visitor's permit is illegal and can result in deportation.

Yacht and Private Vessel Arrivals

Private vessels must clear customs and immigration at designated ports of entry (Nuku'alofa, Neiafu, or Pangai). Contact Tongan authorities on VHF Channel 16 before arrival. All crew and passengers must have valid passports and meet standard entry requirements. The vessel captain must complete customs and immigration formalities for all aboard. Cruising permits are required and fees apply. Yachts must check in and out when moving between island groups.

Medical or Dental Treatment

Visitors seeking medical or dental treatment should enter on a standard visitor's permit but inform immigration of the purpose. Carry documentation from medical providers in Tonga confirming appointments or treatment plans. For extended medical stays, visa extensions can be requested with supporting medical documentation. Medical facilities are limited in Tonga, and most complex procedures require travel to New Zealand, Australia, or Fiji.
