Nukualofa Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed May/2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Nukualofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, welcomes visitors to its island shores. Entry is generally straightforward for tourists from many countries, with visa-free access or visa-on-arrival available for short stays. Upon arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU), travelers will go through immigration and customs control. It is essential for all visitors to have a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, proof of onward or return travel, and evidence of sufficient funds for their stay. The process is typically efficient, but travelers should be prepared for standard questions regarding the purpose and duration of their visit. Tonga is an independent constitutional monarchy, and its immigration policies are distinct. While many Pacific and Commonwealth nations enjoy favorable entry terms, requirements can vary significantly by nationality. All visitors must respect Tongan laws and customs, which are conservative and deeply rooted in Christian values. Travelers should note that business activities and paid work require appropriate visas arranged in advance, regardless of visa-free tourist entry eligibility. Before traveling, it is important to verify the latest entry rules, as policies can change. Ensure your travel documents are in order, and consider any health advisories or vaccination requirements. The official Tongan government websites or your nearest Tongan diplomatic mission are the most reliable sources for the most current information.

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Tonga's visa policy allows citizens of many countries to enter without a visa for short tourism visits. For others, visas must be obtained in advance from a Tongan diplomatic mission. There is currently no Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or eVisa system in place for Tonga.

Citizens of countries not listed in the visa-free category generally require a visa. Some nationalities may be eligible for a Visitor's Visa on Arrival if pre-approval is granted by the Principal Immigration Officer in Nukualofa; this requires sponsorship and application by a host in Tonga before travel.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all your documents (passport, ticket, accommodation details) easily accessible in your hand luggage.
Fill out the arrival card completely and legibly using a pen.
Answer immigration questions politely and directly. Tourism is the expected answer for short-term visitors.
Declare any items required at customs to avoid fines or confiscation.
Local currency (Tongan Pa'anga) is useful for immediate expenses like taxis, but major currencies can be exchanged at the airport or banks in town.

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is highly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical facilities in Tonga are limited, and serious conditions require medical evacuation to New Zealand or Australia, which is extremely expensive.

Current Health Requirements: As of May 2024, there are no COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or quarantine requirements for entry to Tonga. However, this is subject to change; check the Tongan Ministry of Health website or your airline for the latest updates before travel.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children under 18 should carry their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s), along with copies of their passports. This can be requested by immigration to prevent child abduction.

Traveling with Pets

Extremely restrictive. Requires an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forests. Pets must be microchipped, vaccinated ( for rabies, which is not present in Tonga), undergo veterinary tests, and will likely face a mandatory quarantine period upon arrival. The process can take months; start inquiries well in advance.

Extended Stays

To stay beyond the initial 30-day visa-free period (or the duration on your visa), you must apply for an extension at the Immigration Division headquarters in Nukualofa before your current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials, usually for a fee, and may require proof of continued sufficient funds and a valid reason. Long-term stays for work, study, or residency require specific visas applied for from overseas.
