All visas must be obtained in advance from an embassy/consulate or, if eligible, upon arrival.
Nationalities that must obtain a visa prior to travel from a Tongan diplomatic mission.
Citizens of countries not listed in the visa-free category generally require a visa. Some nationalities may be eligible for a Visitor's Visa on Arrival if pre-approval is granted by the Principal Immigration Officer in Nukualofa; this requires sponsorship and application by a host in Tonga before travel.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU), you will proceed through immigration and then collect baggage before passing through customs. The process is generally orderly but can be slow if multiple flights arrive simultaneously.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Tonga has strict customs regulations to protect its agricultural sector and society. All baggage is subject to inspection. Declaring items truthfully is important to avoid penalties.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics
- Indecent or pornographic material
- Firearms, weapons, and ammunition (without prior permit)
- Protected wildlife and products (e.g., ivory, tortoiseshell) under CITES
- Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products (strictly controlled to protect biosecurity)
Restricted Items
- Medicines - Prescription medications should be in original containers, accompanied by a doctor's prescription. It is advisable to carry a letter from your physician.
- Pets - Require an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, quarantine, and specific health certifications. The process is lengthy.
- Cultural artifacts - Export of Tongan antiquities and cultural artifacts requires a permit from the National Reserve Bank of Tonga.
Health Requirements
There are few mandatory vaccination requirements for Tonga, but several are strongly recommended due to health risks present in the region.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required only if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations (MMR, DTaP, etc.)
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Typhoid
- Influenza
- COVID-19
- Measles
Health Insurance
Travel health insurance is highly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical facilities in Tonga are limited, and serious conditions require medical evacuation to New Zealand or Australia, which is extremely expensive.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children under 18 should carry their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s), along with copies of their passports. This can be requested by immigration to prevent child abduction.
Extremely restrictive. Requires an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forests. Pets must be microchipped, vaccinated ( for rabies, which is not present in Tonga), undergo veterinary tests, and will likely face a mandatory quarantine period upon arrival. The process can take months; start inquiries well in advance.
To stay beyond the initial 30-day visa-free period (or the duration on your visa), you must apply for an extension at the Immigration Division headquarters in Nukualofa before your current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials, usually for a fee, and may require proof of continued sufficient funds and a valid reason. Long-term stays for work, study, or residency require specific visas applied for from overseas.
