Use the Teta Tours & Travel bus for the 20-minute ride from Fuaʻamotu International Airport to Nukuʻalofa town centre.
Wave down a shared taxi (marked with a 'T' on the licence plate) along Vuna Road for cheap hops between the waterfront and Talamahu Market.
Ask your accommodation to pre-book a taxi for Sunday when most public transport stops for church services.
Walk or cycle the flat 2 km between the Royal Palace and the market, downtown Nukuʻalofa is compact and pedestrian-friendly.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed taxis at Fua'amotu International Airport often quote inflated flat rates instead of using the meter. Insist on using the official airport taxi rank where drivers display proper identification and agree to use standard rates.
Some baggage porters offer unsolicited help then demand excessive tips. Politely decline assistance unless you specifically requested it, and if you do use porter services, agree on a small gratuity amount beforehand.
Currency exchange booths at the airport may advertise 'no commission' while offering poor exchange rates compared to city banks. Exchange only a small amount for immediate needs and use the booking widget below to compare rates at downtown banks or ATMs for better value.
